The
QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 have been released, showing unprecedented high performance by Ì©¹ú²ÊƱ (AUB) among 1,747 ranked institutions worldwide. The ranking is the largest and most comprehensive on the market and looks at five broad subject areas, based on research and reputation of 55 narrow subjects across various programs, faculties, and schools.
Ì©¹ú²ÊƱhas achieved its highest-ever rank in the subject of medicine, tying at 132 this year as opposed to 135 in the 2024 edition. AUB's placement this year is the highest in the MENA region and is notable among 850 published institutions and 1,455 analyzed institutions. Keeping up a consistent record within the top 150 universities worldwide, this score reflects distinction in 73 subcategories, with six pertaining to health sciences and public health fields, and outstanding performance of various medicine-related faculties, departments, and programs at AUB, including biochemistry, health informatics, health policy, public health, health information management, environmental and occupational health, and all health professions. Ì©¹ú²ÊƱhas attained the highest citation per paper score in medicine (92.7) and the best international research network score (71.3) compared to other subjects at AUB.
Ì©¹ú²ÊƱwas ranked in 25 narrow subjects—rather than academic majors, departments, or faculties—with the use of the All-Science-Journal-Classification (ASJC) codes within the Scopus bibliometric database to identify the subject areas that a given journal typically covers.
Individual subject rankings placed Ì©¹ú²ÊƱwithin the top 300 worldwide in 16 categories, ranking petroleum engineering at 51-100 and development studies, social policy, and politics and international studies at 101-150 under the social sciences and management QS broad subject area. The scope of the QS petroleum engineering individual subject includes chemical health and safety, organic chemistry, geotechnical engineering and engineering geology, environmental chemistry, as well as electrical and electronic engineering.
The QS Subject ranking relies on five performance indicator criteria (termed lenses). The first two lenses are global surveys of academic reputation and employer reputation, which assess the international reputation of institutions in each subject by drawing on survey responses from thousands of academics and graduate employers worldwide. Ì©¹ú²ÊƱhas seen a noticeable increase in its reputation this year, and its best performance was in social policy and nursing in which it scored 69.1 and 87.9 over 100 respectively, according to both academic and employer surveys.
The second two indicators in the QS methodology assess research impact and quality of institution, based on citations per paper and the Hirsch or H-index for relative paper quality in the relevant subject. The pharmacy and pharmacology subject had the highest H-index score (76.6). The fifth index, the International Research Network, is incorporated into at least 17 individual subjects. It measures an institution's global engagement by tracking its international research partnerships and resulting co-authored publications.
“As we celebrate this milestone, I encourage each of you to continue striving for excellence, with the aim to reach even higher ranks next year," wrote Dr. Raymond Sawaya, vice president for medical affairs and Raja N. Khuri Dean of Medicine, congratulating Ì©¹ú²ÊƱfaculty and staff. “Let us persist in producing transformative research that is widely recognized and impactful, increasing our international research networks, and boosting our academic and employer reputation. Thank you all for your dedication and hard work. Congratulations again to Ì©¹ú²ÊƱand everyone involved in this remarkable achievement."
