Outreach and awareness efforts within the Arab
countries are currently limited. There are almost no cross-Arab conferences in
the fields of sciences, energy, and fusion, and very few scientific programs
are dedicated to plasma physics and fusion science. Additionally, the general
public remains largely unaware of recent advances in green science and energy
production, as well as of the existence of many research centers and innovative
startups in the Arab world. ​
Conference Organizations in the Arab World on Fusion
To address these gaps, the AFEI plans to organize conferences and meetings in the Arab world focused on energy, green energy, and more particularly fusion energy.
To support participation in international conferences, the AFEI will seek funding to help Arab students and professors attend these events. Engaging in international research and development is essential for the success of the fusion program. This initiative aims to support students or professors each year. Recipients will be required to submit a report detailing their conference activities.
Outreach Towards Arab Universities and Research Centers
We estimate that one of the most urgent actions to be taken is to approach Arab universities and research centers to:
- Encourage them to hire professors in the fields related to fusion energy. This Initiative will inform the universities that we will accompany the new hires in their quest to establish laboratories and develop their research programs.
- Spread knowledge about the field of fusion among students and professors and highlight its relationship to the other fields that may be more known like Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science etc. This is done by a set of conferences given in-person or online at Arab universities.
- Organize trips for students and professors to plasma or fusion laboratories that exist inside the Arab world or outside, in countries with a well-developed fusion program.
- Encourage the development of joint research topics among Arab students and professors.
General Public Outreach
Additional outreach ideas include organizing field trips to relevant locations such as fusion devices and research labs, conducting workshops about energy with a focus on fusion, creating engaging and educational videos in a fun, dialogue-based format, and hosting festivals at universities and schools to promote awareness and interest in energy topics. These initiatives aim to foster a deeper understanding and support for fusion energy and its potential benefits.
We also plan on writing outreach articles in both English and Arabic, the initiative aims to grow curiosity and support among the general public, highlighting fusion as a potential solution for environmental and energy challenges.
Field trips. In a selected number of countries, AFEI will partner with local educational organizations (NGOs or social enterprises) to take high school students and young university students on trips to locations related to energy, and wherever possible to fusion-related research. Educational and entertaining programs will be developed to attract students and give them, on the one hand, culture, and knowledge, and on the other, increase their interest in the topic.
Workshops about energy. We will work on enhancing the collaboration with Arab universities, research centers, educational NGOs, and Social enterprises to develop workshops, where an element related to fusion is involved. They can be classical physics-based in order to make them more hands-on.
Video campaigns. A campaign of approximately 20 very short videos (20 sec to 1min) plus 1-2 long videos of around 5 minutes each will be developed during the 1st year. Our main target is Arab universities and research centers.
